A NEW BRAIN (2019)

A New Brain tells the emotional story of a struggling composer's battle with severe illness, and the resulting turmoil between himself and his loved ones. The stage floor was designed specifically to create a sense of unity between the scenery, lighting, and marketing. There was a disconnect between the extremely geometric, earth-toned set and the dripping, rainbow watercolor Rorschach brains present on the show poster. In order to bridge this gap, I took inspiration from the brains on the poster to create a freeform shape on the stage floor that when lit, would reflect whatever colors were splashed across the palettes that served as a scenic backdrop. In doing so, this allowed the set to mimic the rainbow tones on the poster, as well as the brain motif, while still retaining its original geometric and simplistic nature.
